174 Capt. Nathaniel White was born in England in about 1629, the eldest son of Elder John White and Mary Levett. He came to the new world with his parents when he was just three years old. They sailed on the ship Lyon which arrived at Massachusetts Bay Colony on September 16, 1632, sailed by Captain Peirce. His father moved to Hartford, Connecticut in about 1642 and Nathaniel continued on to Middletown, Connecticut in about 1650 and was one of the first settlers of that town. An amazingly well respected man, Nathaniel was elected as a representative of Middletown to the General Court eight-five times, being about 81 the last time he was appointed. He married a girl named Elisabeth in about 1651, but nothing is known of her other than her marriage to Nathaniel. She was the mother of his eight children. They were: 1. Nathaniel White (1652-1742) 2. Elizabeth White Clark (1655-1711) 3. John White (1657-1748) 4. Mary White Cornwell Bacon (1659-1732) 5. Ensign Daniel White (1661-1739) 6. Sarah White Smith (born 1664) 7. Jacob White (1665-1738) 8. Joseph White (1667-1726) After Elisabeth died in 1690, Nathaniel remarried to the mother of two of his daughters-in-law. Her name was Martha Mould, widow of Hugh Mould and daughter of John Coit. Her husband and father had both been well known ship builders. Nathaniel died in Middletown and was buried next to his first wife.
He was of the Grand Jury in 1662. 1661-1710 was annually elected to the General Court, appointed Commissioner and Magistrate 1669. Representive 1665-1677 every year and almost every session with the title of Ensign, but after the Great Indian War it swelled to Lieut, was Capt before his death. Capt Nathaniel was very strong towards schooling "The good that men do lives after them" and on January 6, 1902 when Cromwell's first fine schoolhouse was opened for use the town unaminously voted to name it "The Nathaniel White Public School." Nath aniel was very involved in town business.
